Cultural Activities

Our club has done a lot of activities to promote outrigger sport in vanua levu and also to fundraise. When we founded our club we had only one canoe and some paddles. We had to work hard for all our expenses since most of our members are youth. The sport is not popular in Savusavu and we had no support from the community. So we started fundraising and exposed our club to savusavu public and tourists. Slowly the people recognize us and now we are getting more support from individuals and businesses.

Joyrides in Savusavu Bay
For the arrival of crusing boats we offer joyrides in savusavu bay with the tourists. Our paddlers dressed in traditional costumes show the tourists beautyful spots in the bay, teach basics in outrigger paddling and give an insight into fijian culture. All tourists who have paddled with us were delighted.

Polynesian and Fijian Dance
As one fundraising activity some of our clubmembers choreographed a polynesian paddler dance and also a fijian traditional dance from Vanua Levu and performed it. Village boys from Savudrodro had taught us the meke and included our boys in their group. As a paddler you could see that dance and paddling have something in common. For a good dance performance you need to work togeher as a team and your movements have be be synchronized. Dancers have to be fit as well.

Drama Competition
We participated in a drama competition with our young paddlers with two plays. The youth gave an excelent performance.

Information and Cake stand in front of Savusavu market
For our trip to the wai Tui International 2010 in Nadi we fundraised with a stand in front of savusavu market where we sold cakes and bilos of yaqona. A good way to get money and show the people what our club is doing.

Fundraising in villages and small communities - gunu sede
Our club has strong ties to nearby village where some of our paddlers come from. We organised gunu sedes for instance one in Nacekoro - the village of our U19 paddler Luisa. Villagers joined us and we told them about our sport.

BBQ for Digicel and MAi TV - Serevi and Ryder go paddling with us
We sold hot dogs for a digicel/ Mai TV promotion. Launching of Mai TVs Programme in Vanua levu. Serevi and Wiliam Ryder were present and used the opportunity to try out paddling with our club members.
